Gone cuckoo!~

It's official...I'm old!  This morning was the first day of.............wait for it....................the  GBBC.....That would be Great Backyard Bird Count.  Sad but true, I've turned the corner onto Geriatric Blvd.  I even asked for binoculars for Christmas and received a Birdopoly Game to boot.  We have four feeders in the backyard and one on the porch. My camera is always near the patio doors and I have more pictures of nasty looking turkeys than you can shake a stick at.  Today I observed for about an hour... The skies are clear and blue and the sun is shining brightly so breakfast in the backyard was attended well by my feathered (and furry) friends. I'm surprised how well they all get along and always intrigued how hunger overrides fear. This morning my birding included: Turkeys, mourning doves, blue jays, downy and hairy woodpeckers, dark eyed juncos, nuthatches and a few crows thrown in for good measure.  Not bad for less than an hour's recording. If I were to report furry friends as well, I'd have to add a scruffy deer and 9 squirrels. The snow is gone from everywhere but my backyard....just a dusting but the sun only shines out there for a few hours each morning..God providing!  There is really no more beautiful place on earth in my book and that's exactly why I'm here on this sunny, 40 degree morning and not in the Sunshine state with the hubs!  Give me a morning like this any day over ants, spiders and sand! I might even hit the porch and read a spell.... pretty warm in the sunshine!!
BTW, the GBBC is a lot of fun and sponsored by our very own Cornell University...It lasts for 4 days and is o darn simple even I can look out the window, count and identify the birds and fill in the online form. Mr. Audubon would be proud!
