Award season is upon us. We'll soon learn the who are the best of the best, what movies are top notch and who's wearing ...who? I take each award with a grain of salt..................around the rim of my bloody mary. The People's Choice awards are the only ones I actually feel give us the best perspective of the good, the bad and the ugly. Although award shows in general, are not really all that great. My favorite show applauding the arts is "The Kennedy Center Honors." The classiest heralding of talent on broadcast TV. Since its inception in 1978, the Kennedy Center Honors has redefined America's perception of its artistic legacy and reinvented the way America rewards its artists. The Honors have been compared to a knighthood in Britain, or the French Legion of Honor--the quintessential reward for a lifetime's endeavor. At the same time, the annual addition of new names to the roster of Honors recipients charts the international standard of excellence set by America's artists.
The annual Honors gala is an evening without categories, without disappointments, and without competition.
The complete list of guest performers is kept secret until the show is in progress, keeping both the Honorees and the nation on the edge of their seats. "Our tradition of surprises and surprise guests is particularly special," says George Stevens, Jr., the show's longtime co-producer. "[The fun of the show] is increased by not knowing what to expect; the evening becomes exciting for the Honorees, whose reactions and pleasure at the proceedings make the evening so much fun to watch."
I could do without watching the President and his spouse sway in their seats but I presume POTUS and FLOTUS were never a "maybe" on the guest list. At least we didn't have to hear his empty words although we did have to see his rendition of honoree, Al Green in a video clip. Lady Gaga didn't disappoint once again as I always listen to her with my eyes tightly closed. I am, however; amazed that her significant other, hunky Severide from Chicago Fire, is till firmly entrenched by her side. (I would have put her out a long time ago;-) The tributes to Tom Hanks and Sting were awesome. Definitely a 2 thumbs up event. The award shows on tap will pale in comparison!
