50 Shades of Grey (or maybe red)

Who isn't talking about 50 shades of Grey? Early and late night talk shows, Dr. Phil, daytime talk shows, book clubs, dinner dates and girl's luncheons that's who!!  Now, not only are writers commiserating about it but complaining because a bidding war for movie rights has given E.L. James (incidentally not her real name...shocker) unprecedented rights to the script, casting, editing and most all other considerations during filming (along with a mere 5 million bucks....  not even JK Rowling got all that!
For those of you who haven't heard of the book, ( because you've been in a Siberian prison or living on top of Mt. Everest) it is an epic saga of a naive, young, college graduate who learns about love and sex in an odd way and tries to help her teacher transform into the man he should have been allowed to grow into.  His introduction to sex was as bizarre as hers....therefore explaining a bit of each's obsession with love, sex and each other.
If you were to go to the library in Skaneateles it is told, and placed your name on the waiting list for one of the many copies it lends, you would be # 701 as of yesterday!! I, on the other hand, a lover of hard (and I use the word differently now) copy books,  decided to purchase the trilogy through my Kindle.  My library is suffering due to my new obsession with technology but my shelf space is limited in the new house and I found I needed to bite the bullet and change my ways.... not an easy task for me!
The book was originally believed to be written for the new genre of bizarre readers of such novels as Twilight and the Hunger Games but quickly spread (another word I use differently) to the married and over 30 sector of female readers.
Yesterday, during our monthly ladies' luncheon, the book was discussed...Amazing how 11 gals could have 11 different opinions...OK, maybe not really all that amazing. It was described as everything from mind boggling and thoughtful to raunchy and risque'.  Some had read it, some were reading it, some had stopped reading it and one wondered what the hell it was!! Our differences so make the world go round!!
There's lots of speculation about who the stars will be. It appears that Ms. James prefers unknowns.....All I really know is they won't be unknowns for long!
I must run as my Kindle is calling, my lip is healing from the biting and mind is longing for stimulation and knowledge!! We're never too old to live vicariously through others.....so they say!!! ;-)

Wildlife Habitat

Yes we do have a wildlife habitat here at EIEIO.  Yesterday when the impending storm was in the air, a few of my furry neighbors went a little bit haywire.  Freaky Tom, the turkey with missing feathers, was pretty much hugging the patio and gobbled loudly for at least 10 minutes.  Just prior to that, I heard this loud fighting and screeching sound coming from the hill just outside my den.  It almost sounded like two young bobcats ( or very large cats at best).... As I was scoping out the hillside, I saw two, very well nourished woodchucks scuffling, "screaming" and rolling down through the ground foliage....right out into the lawn.... They circled each other for a few seconds and then proceeded to veg out...not at all sure what that was about.  A few minutes later, the hills were alive with bird tweets ... from tufted titmice to pileated woodpeckers...All I could think of were the warnings of animal wildlife aficionados explaining the sophisticated senses of the animal and bird kingdoms and their keen sense of impending danger....  maybe we were in for a blinger of a storm as all of this was happening amidst loud claps of thunder.  A huge gust of wind introduced the mini storm which dropped much needed rain on lawns and crops.....and the chickens, whose coop door had blown shut and whose feed was left open to the elements. I'll get this chicken thing right eventually, Grandma Iva!!!  Speaking of chickens...... last night as Lee and I were watching the chickens ( I know, that in itself isn't right), we noticed a worm crawling across a rock in their pen.  Lee hollered, "Get it, eat it, come on what are you?.....chicken?....entertainment is abundant here at EIEIO.... ♥

"Memori" al Week-end

We had a good week-end to kick off the unofficial summer season.  A wee bit too hot for Papa and me but we managed to sit very still a few times and remember that we were old.  Saturday morning, Jess, B and I went to visit Grandma. She had had a very long day on Friday with a ride on the Gadabout Van to CMC for a Doppler scan of her leg... Sure enough, there was a blood clot.. Finally they managed to get her back to GNF and on coumadin.. Still frazzles me when I think it's merely medicinal use of rat poison. It seems to be doing the trick although this was a long "stringy" clot.. (I know, TMI)  Anyway, Gram was full of it and she and B had a good time singing and dancing. These are the times I hope B will remember versus the times we think are sad. A child's perspective of life (and old age) is refreshing once they get by the smell!!  After our visit with Great Grandma, we went to visit Great Grandpa and all who live in Indian Mound.  There were a few "who's who" stories to tell and a short generational time line.  It's really very hard to explain as one family virtually had children spanning a generation ( brothers old enough to be father and son.)  Last night was also the beginning of the 3 part docudrama of the legend of the Hatfield's and McCoy's.  I'm quite liking that we were the bad guys!  I've never been very fond of wearing white.... now I know why! (ok that and the fact that it adds 50#....)  There are many versions of the Feud and this story seems to take on at least three so far...the pig thievery, daughter snitching (or snatching..however you look at it) and timber rights....We'll see what develops into night 2!
So, as Memorial Days go, this was a good one. We got Bailee back from her Dad's a couple of hours early, we had family for a steak cook out (thanks Jill and Jim) and we had a visit from one of our resident eagles.  Now if we can just squelch this 90 degree weather, I'll literally be a happy camper!

"Are we there yet?"

The age old comment from kids throughout the years, "Are we there yet?"  Sometimes those words have been uttered as early as minutes out of the driveway.  As time goes by and lifestyles change, even for a child, it seems that kids are still anxious to get where they're going.  I remember packing little surprises for the kids to keep them anticipating something fun and to allay their dread (and mine) of driving long distances.  It's no longer matchbook cars and a coloring book and crayons.  Today we make sure we're armed with batteries, charging cords and headphones.  Last night Bailee, Jess and I rode all the way to Groton for supper (15 minutes). We enjoyed a nice supper at Farrells, "the place where they have high walls where nobody can see what you're doing and everybody has their own TV." Upon leaving, we decided to take a little tour to see a friend's new mini barn. About 5 minutes down the road, Bailee spouted those familiar words.......but this time with a little sign of the times twist.  It wasn't "Are we almost there" or "Are we almost to Grandma's"....... Our little child of the 2000's asked, "Are we almost to Internet, Grandma?"  Gotta love technology and WiFi and , of course, Bailee!

This Many

Wal-Mart provides us with so much.  There is little that we need in this world, tangible things I mean, that we can't obtain at Wal-Mart.  Everything from potting soil and peanuts to poise pads (just guessing) and pancake mix.  But, I think the thing I like most are the posts and emails that circulate from those who have people watched and photographed a few of those upstanding shoppers who obviously have no mirrors in their homes or marbles in their heads.  Sometimes I just glance at the photos to make myself feel good!  The other day I received the photo above.  If it weren't so sad, it would be funny... Ok it's pretty funny anyway.  And they say the United States is lax in math and science...It's obvious we're fine as long as we have both hands and all our fingers.  I think Wal-Mart really does have everything we need in life...I'm a strong proponent in laughter and they sure provide that!   I'm off to slip on my thong, stretch pants and halter top and do a little shopping for the holiday week-end!!

Man's best friend?

If man's best friend is the dog, what's a woman's..or even a child's???  Well at EIEIO, a little girl's is a chicken!  We've had 18 of them since they were about a week old.  They were all pretty skittish from day one but they're getting little chicken personalities now..I know, I'm probably giving this way more thought than it deserves but chickens can be great pets too.. I've read about it and if it's printed, it must be so! Last night Bailee decided to get in the pen for awhile and bond....Brownie, the only fuzzy, brown chick was her favorite in the beginning... Now it's the fugliest...(try explaining to an inquisitive 5 year old what fugly means)  I said it's "fine" but it's ugly... That worked!  Anyway, Brownie's lost her favor and the only true, all white chick has taken to B... literally... It followed her everywhere last night and even allowed her to pick her up and snuggle.  She loves to have her head and neck rubbed...(the chicken not Bailee.)  I wish I could figure out how to get a video here...she kept remarking how much she loved chickens and wished she could sleep with her :-o  The "girls" have learned to take flight and are regularly trying to head north..literally. Luckily there's a covering on top which was installed to keep varmints out.....and now keeps the girls in. We still have a few months before they'll begin to lay. We're all hoping they live that long.  We're planning on constructing a new residence for them and maybe moving them across them across the creek.  Not that I don't like chicken shit in my yard and it is a wonderful fertilizer but we need to make room for the PHEASANTS...  I vetoed the peacocks after hearing their squawking, annoying yell.. After all, everything grows up and loses it's cuteness..... Everything except of course, my cute little chick, Bailee.

Life's a Beach!

What a busy 7 days.  We drove to Charlotte last Mon/Tues. (takes the old folks a bit longer), picked up Jeff, drove to Myrtle Beach on Wed., enjoyed Carrabba's, Dirty Dicks (we got crabs from Dirty Dicks:) and Outback, had a wonderful time seeing old friends, celebrating with the Dyers and basking in the sunshine and the ocean. 7 days does make one week (weak):-)  We had fairly good traveling conditions and even made the return trip to EIEIO in ONE day... that's really good for me!  I like about a 6 hour travel day.
The wedding was perfect♥  A tad overcast which was really a blessing as sun on the beach can be a bit much.  The beach house was the perfect setting for a relaxing reception and some much welcomed "catching up!"   It was great to meet Cori's hubby Tyler, who Jeff immediately bonded with and who entertained us... a lot!  Our accommodations were great and only a few short blocks from the beach house.  We even connected with some more of our breakfast club pals and enjoyed supper, ice cream and people watching. Bike Week makes for some interesting sights.
It was great to spend a few days with Jeff although a week without Miss B is like a day without chocolate....it just shouldn't happen!

I'm happiest right here at EIEIO with my high grass, happy chickens, and hungry birds.  All of which need my attention ASAP.
P.S.  What would a trip to Myrtle Beach be without bringing home the crabs..... Thankfully it's for Miss B.

Make each day count

This morning I write with a heavy heart. This week-end the man upstairs saw fit to relocate a pretty special guy.  I know he probably wanted his wit and compassion and good nature up there but Joanne and his family and friends still desperately needed it down here.   True love is seldom found once, how lucky to have found it twice... I'm sure there's a reason but I guess my faith needs a little tweaking because I just don't get it. What I do get is that nobody is promised anything... not another dollar, not another smile, not another day:-(   We had planned to head to Myrtle Beach tomorrow to spend a few days and celebrate our wonderful friends' son's wedding. Jeffrey was meeting us there...change of plans...we're heading out today, stopping in Charlotte and picking him up.. Guess I need that Jeffrey "fix" a little sooner.... I'll miss saying goodbye to B after school but we can "FaceTime" later and we did spend some quality B/Gram time yesterday. In fact all of us did the family thing..3 meals, visit to Gram, chicken chores, lawn work, puzzles, "outdoor personal water fountain time (and time and time....)" and ice cream. Needless to say, we all slept well.

I may not be as vigilant a blogger for the next few days. I will have my laptop, kindles and iPhone though so I'll be available.  Please God don't let me far from cell service, WiFi and power... I may not survive!

Mothers

I'm surrounded by Mothers.  There's a mother robin sitting on her nest above the front door. there's a "Mother Goose"..(not that Mother Goose) across the road with her goslings and there's a mother turkey in the backyard. I'm sure many of the less colorful birds feasting from my feeders are new Mothers too.  Jess visits every day and she's a Mother.  I was even balancing checkbooks this morning and I found a MOTHER of a mistake. I caught it and corrected it... that's becausee I'm the Mother of fixing things ..I have been for nearly 34 years and I'm pretty darned good at it. I can make boo boos less painful, I can make spinach taste good, I can make schoolwork fun, I can make singing sound good and dancing look graceful..I can even make money  miraculously appear in bank accounts.. I'm that good! In fact I'm so good, I'm thinking about buying myself a Mother's day present.  I know, a few days ago I said I didn't need gifts.  I was wrong.... write it down, tell the world...it happens...not often, but it happens!  I haven't quite decided what I'll get, but it'll be good.  I really don't care if I need it, if it's too much money or if it's extravagant... I'm a fixer and I've earned it!  Happy Mother's Day to me♥ ( and to all of you, my faithful readers and fellow fixers)

Mother's Day

Only 4 days until Mother's Day.  The roots of Mother's Day are as deep as any holiday. While the Mother's Day we celebrate is a fairly recent development, the basic idea goes back to ancient mythology—to the long ago civilizations of the Greeks and Romans. The Greeks paid annual homage to Cybele, ( oh my Sybil.. that answers some questions) the mother figure of their gods, and the Romans dedicated an annual spring festival to the mother of their gods.In 16th century England a celebration called "Mothering Sunday" was inaugurated—a Sunday set aside for visiting one's mother. The eldest son or daughter would bring a "mothering cake," which would be cut and shared by the entire family. Family reunions were the order of the day, with sons and daughters assuming all household duties and preparing a special dinner in honor of their mother. In America, in 1872, Julia Ward Howe, the gal who fought for abolition, women's rights, and world peace, suggested that June 2 be set aside to honor mothers in the name of world peace. The idea died a quick death. Nothing new happened until 1907, when a Miss Anna M. Jarvis, of Philadelphia, took up the banner. A service was held in a church on May 10 and voila, the second Sunday became synonymous with Mother's day. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill designating the second Sunday in May as a legal holiday to be called "Mother's Day"—dedicated "to the best mother in the world, your mother."
There's your history lesson!
I don't expect a gift for Mother's Day... Each and every day with Jeff, Jess and Bailee is a gift....for real.  Being a Mom is a privilege... Bailee often explains the importance of being a Mom.  When hers says "No!" she comes quickly to me, snuggles by my ear and says" Grandma, whisper after me.  I know Mom said no but you're her Mom and she has to listen to you.......right?" Their obviously is a ranking in Motherhood.  The other day she told me that I wasn't old "because I still had a mother." She's a very smart little girl!! So, Sunday should be a day of sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters throwing on a big helping of "Mothering."  Whisper after me, "Happy Mother's day Mom, you're the best and I love you More♥"

National Teacher Appreciation Week

You all know how I feel about teachers.. most of them anyway....In fact, if I didn't appreciate a couple...you probably knew that too.  I was blessed to have many wonderful teachers... Oddly enough, I remember and appreciate some elementary teachers more than some high school ones.  Maybe that's because I was more appreciative as a child and less so as a teenager..I am now at a stage in my life where many of my teachers have passed away and my teacher friends have retired and a new crop of educators are stimulating my granddaughter....I'm watching..very closely.  So far, so good! These fine people are with our children (and grandchildren) 7 hours a day, 5 days a week, 180 days a year...NO occupation holds so much responsibility. They are the keepers of our kids minds. Albert Einstein once said, "Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one learned in school." Scary stuff!  Are teachers underpaid? Probably... I know, they only work 180 days a year, have the entire summer off and get health insurance.  To most of us that sounds pretty darn good. I'm sure if you were to subtract their taxes, their student loans and just plain the costs of living...the end result wouldn't be so rosy.  I had a friend, a retired teacher, say just the other day, "Teachers aren't in it for the income, they're in it for the outcome!!"
Thank God!

Success

As I received the news this morning that another of Jeff's good friends (and ours) has become a Dad, I began to think of many of  the 20 & 30 something crowd that we know. What an amazing group, all coming from small town America. We know Doctors and Dr's to be, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Homicide Detectives, NYS Troopers, Deputy Sheriffs, Engineers, Pharmacists, Teachers, Therapists, Counselors, Builders, Masons, Truck Drivers, Laborers, Bankers, Chefs and last but very much not least, Moms.  That's been my occupation for nearly 34 years and never once, ok maybe a once, have I regretted that I wasn't something else.  Because in all honesty and not to be flippant, I am all of those things that I listed.  Yes, even a homicide detective.  Several small animals have succumbed on my watch and I've had to track down the culprit.
This next generation will be OK!  I fret over the following one as I'm sure our parents did for us and generations ago did for them.  All they really need to know how to do is THINK!  If you're a thinker, you're a success!  Living in the moment is important (especially for us.. the newest crop of Senior Citizens (ouch, that hurt) but forward thinking is the answer.  My great grandfather taught that to his son, and he to his and my Dad to me.  Sure we could be hit by a texting teenager tomorrow but our ducks should be in a row and someone should be privy to where our ducks are and thankful that our nest is in order.  I think this next generation, well most of them anyway, will do that.  If the government could just back off a little, I think they'll be just fine. Success is lined with a bit of "suck" but they'll think their way through.
I'm so proud of the kids that filled our house with laughter, raced with Jeff, became lasting friends, celebrated birthdays and holidays with us and became successful...We'll be ok and so will they!

There's an App for that?

Now, you can even get mooned on your phone.  In conjunction with iTunes and The Farmer's Almanac, there's a new full moon app being introduced called the  “Full Moon Finder” App! Each day, a large Moon image will show how much of its surface is lit—along with Moon folklore for the day and the traditional name of each full Moon.
This Saturday, May 5, is the Full Flower Moon. The largest moon of the year...It's also known as the Corn Planting Moon or the Milk Moon. Corn planting was done under the light of this moon for hundreds of years...long before tractors and long before tractors with lights. It will be optimum at 11:36 P.M. if the clouds cooperate!

For some reason whenever I think of a full moon, I think of Resa Dee and Lori B. Hmmmm:-)

Step by Step

Everyone is under the misconception that new houses are hassle free!  Wrong... We have lived here almost 4 years...and not everything is "just right" Goldilocks!  Sometimes it takes a few years for things to settle.  I located the house on rocky ground.  I received nasty frowns from the excavators and the landscapers and the builders but I wanted it where I wanted it and hey, I was writing the checks so undoubtedly...I was right........but not "just right!"  We've definitely settled.  A spot in the basement has a little teeny "step" under the stairs and all of the outdoor steps no longer line up perfectly with the siding... so the end panels have to be re-cut and set for four sets of steps.. That little gap just wasn't cutting it for aesthetics....at least not for me.
The stairs to and from the basement have yet to be covered.  No carpet.... that' just plain dirty and no paint...yet.  Beware oh mighty painter, Billy B., with the help of home websites, I found the answer... We're going to kill 2 birds with one stone (and several unused cans of paint)....kind of.  We're (and by we're I mean you, Billy)..going to paint all the treads one basic color and use all of our "leftover" colors from the house to paint the risers. (see the photo).  That way we'll be introducing everyone who heads from the mancave and/or theater to the wonderful, colorful land of Sandy (and Lee.)  I remember Billy telling me that I set a new record for him for the number of different colors he had to paint in one house!!! Yay me!!!! I believe there are 15 colors for the main floor and 7 for the theater and bathroom and "lobby." I must go count and see how many risers we actually have.  I know he'll be tickled when I tell him my new plan.  He always smiles and accepts so graciously any paint scheme I dream up.........and then walks slowly away shaking his head....He's a trooper though... my own Michelangelo:-)  Now I'll see if he's ready to "step up" to my newest project....

Paraprosdokians

Nope, it's not a new reality show like the Kardashians. They are figures of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected; frequently humorous. ...(Winston Churchill loved them)

May Day

May Day signifies the middle of the time from the beginning of spring until the beginning of summer. Ancient spring rites that related human fertility to crop fertility gave birth to most modern May Day festivities. May 1st  is the traditional day to crown the May queen, dance around the maypole, perform mummers’ plays, and generally celebrate the return of spring.  May Day is always nostalgic for me.  As a child, like 50 years ago:-o....I would eagerly wait for the back doorbell to ring.  I'd watch out my upstairs window and see my friend, Lee (not the present day Lee) hightailing it back across Main Street.  I'd give him time to get out of sight before I'd open the door and retrieve my May basket.  It always held freshly picked flowers of the season...tulips, daffodils and/or hyacinths.  I was never sure if his Mom's garden had been raided or some neighbors along the way.  I didn't really care because the flowers were now mine!.. I remember learning about the May Pole traditions but had never actually seen one until a few years ago.  The family that now resides in the old O'Connell farm (where my very first love was raised) had erected a pole and celebrated right there in their front yard. Quite a festive sight for sure.
May was always the best month for starting your tan. My friend Sharon used to sit on her patio with a foil, sun reflector and begin browning.  I thought that was so cool....now I look like an alligator purse but 40 years ago, I glowed.... What a difference 4 decades make!!!
Today is Bailee's snack day and she'll be sharing the "dirt dessert May baskets" we made last night. Amazing what you can do with a cup, pudding, crumbled oreos, gummy worms and flowers....(picture to follow later).
A little rainy right now but sunshine to end the day and top off another wonderful May Day!!   and btw L.R., where's my May basket?   You're just down the road :-)
